Help with my Hack?
Lately I've been really wanting to get back to hacking Zelda ALTTP again. So far nothing has really been done but writing down what we what to have in the game, taking notes and reading Seph's recently released guide for the game.
What I want from this thread is to find people who would want to join this project. The only people working is my brother and I (phazonwebb16 on here) and we recognize how hard making a hack is, especially Zelda 3 with Hyrule Magic being buggy, and waiting for Black Magic to be released. What I want is to really plan out what path we want this hack to take in terms of the story, game play, graphics, etc.
I know how hard and time consuming hacking is and that's why I need other people helping us to make this a reality! I have done stuff like this but always end up just abandoning it whether it be Hyrule Magic screwing something up, the content not coming to par expectations or just not having motivation to continue it, and I think having other people around the project can help me stay focused and never letting me giving up faith in the project. I'm not trying to beg really, I just want to make something with this game and others because I love to create, and games is something I cherished since the NES days...
Anyways, in conclusion I need help and asking you guys because I see hope. I see hope this community to create beautiful hacks for Zelda ALTTP and see it grow and maybe becoming the place for Zelda hacking.

Re: Help with my Hack?
Taking notes and planning on ahead can never be a bad thing!
Every time you get an idea, you write it down so that it may be used later.
Start slow, the project doesn't need to a full one.. learn the basics of editing this game. Once you get the hang of it, you can start thinking about making the project bigger.
For exemple, at first, try editing the overworld and see if that's something you're interested in shaping up. If it doesn't, you go give a try at editing dungeons.
Some people find it easier to edit overworlds, while others are masters at editing dungeons. It's much easier to split tasks, if you know your expertises and your fails.
So at first, try editing many aspects of this game until you find your true purpose.
Take some of my hacks for exemple.
I excel at doing overworlds... I could easily spend years creating dozen of different overworlds with different shapes and sizes easily... when it comes to dungeons though, it's another story, I'm struggling bigtime. Not my cup of tea we could say. Takes me years to do basic puzzles.
This was part of the reason I joined with Euclid to pimp his overworlds in his Tower of the triforce hack (later became Parallel worlds). He was better at creating puzzles then me... even though they we're harsh for many people :P, they were still ten thousand times better then anything I could do.
If you take the hack I was making at the time before joining him (Gates of Time) you'll see it still isn't fully done since my dungeons sucked and that wasn't something I was good at. Turns out Puzzledude came in to save the day and will finalize it sometime after helping with Parallel Universes since he's really an expert with dungeons.
Take Shards of Might as another exemple. I had created the overworlds and had Omega/DudeMan to create the indoors dungeons. The hack was unfinished and bugged, so Puzzledude once again came in to finish it and re-released it under a different name (Godesses of wisdom).
Lastly, with Parallel Universes, I'm again struggling creating the dungeons, so thankfully I have Puzzledude to help me create the dungeons (removing a big burden from my shoulders). Add to this bangwagon another plentyful of good hackers to help me (Euclid, Conn, RedScorpion and even MathOnNapkins with his helpful disassembly), all tasks are split equally so that we find the job easier.
Overall, every team hacking this game should at least be at first:
-Someone to do the overworld,
-another one to handle the dungeons
-and the other people can all join in later once the hack is well advanced!
Of course it's also helpful to have people sharing ideas/helping you whenever the game screws up, but then that's the reason Zeldix is open for business! Helping you guys/gals anytime a bug hinders your progress! Most issues have fixes actually and it's really easily to avoid most of them!
So go ahead and give it a test run to understand better what you excel at and I'm sure you'll find your domain real quick!
Eventually getting better you might even consider joining forces with Spane's and Moegami's hacks since these two are really starting to take off really well!

Re: Help with my Hack?
A zelda 3 hack has three main aspects.
-dungeons
-overworld
-asm hacking
Currently you have to find guys there are good in one or more of this aspects. Take Prophet Of Chaos.
The asm hacking is a job of XaserLe. He is really good in that. He createt a patch so i can use many overlays in my areas (fog in the graveyard, snow in the mountains). Currently he is working on my hud and inventory :-)
The dungeon editing and overworld editing is a part for me. I'm really good in both aspects. SePH can attest this. He currently saw my overworlds and also played a complete dungeon createt by myself, and he was amazed by it. Because of it new graphics and his size.
About a month ago moeagami joined my project. He will currently working on his hack but will help me by my hack. He always say it's my hack so i can give him guidelines and he will create the dungeon or the overworld areas by these guidelines, but with his touch.

Re: Help with my Hack?
Thanks guys!
Honestly I had worked on all those aspects and so far Overworlds is what I love to make. The Dungeons are much tougher because of what you want in a Dungeon like the kinds of puzzles, or what enemies will be in there.
I was trying ASM on Zelda 3 the other day reading up on Basic ASM documents and was trying to make the flippers give you the flippers and the fire rod, just for practicing. I didn't really find the code I was looking for and ended up glitching the game. I think I was editing the code for obtaining items and that any item I would get would always be the flippers and the fire rod. If anyone could find out how I would that let me know.
I have experience with three of those aspects as well as any others not mentioned. Been doing this since around 2007 and tried making a hack on my own. So far it hasn't worked out and need other people if I'm gonna get done, and I do.
For now I just want say thanks for those tips and I will re-learn Hyrule Magic and get the feel for it again before attempting the project.
EDIT: Here is something I did with the overworld: picture

Re: Help with my Hack?
Thank god, we have someone new, who can also draw overworlds. This picture is a relieve to see, after that other topic, which was sent into the Void. Of course you probably will have to move the upper tree-line a bit further down (add another line of trees), so that the drawing-unmatching between areas is not seen in-game, when traversing between areas.
I also hope, that you have this in Hyrule Magic and not only as a PNG picture file. Next step would be to also change some gfx, however this is not necessary to do.

Re: Help with my Hack?
That looks awesome! I just checked that thread that went to the void and after seeing that I'm glad there are other people skilled with overworld in hyrule magic, since it's a pretty complicated system.
I'd recommend updating some of the textures, though it's not really necessary it does help. And it may just be my brain from seeing link to the past maps so much but I can see a lot of similarities in that map to other parts of link to the past. Custom tiling is a lot of work but this at least shows you can put things together well.
Keep up the good work man! I know how hard it can be to work on a hack alone, but this forum is a huge help.

Re: Help with my Hack?
I forgot to add that that was from a older hack I did back not too long ago. I actually remember making a castle with new graphics and actually got it done, it looked pretty good and actually would have been cool to let you guys see it, sadly it's no longer with me and will forever be lost to history...
But I'm going back and making another one with even better graphics and you will see it once I can get them done then later will attempt to add them in Hyrule Magic.
I'm glad you guys liked it, I hope to get to do more for the hack I'm making soon.

Re: Help with my Hack?
I remember seing awesome custom graphics from you in another board under your old username (Webber1900).
Let me dig them up again... here we go!
Are those going to be used in your new hack?
Those graphics were simply amazing 8)
Can't wait to see what you'll come up with next as you show great potential!

Re: Help with my Hack?
I was planning on making new tiles to fit in the new hack, but I will consider them if I don't like the new ones, I also may put them out there for the public use, I'm sure people will find use for them? But thanks for the great comments!

Re: Help with my Hack?
So me and Phazonwebb have decided on the title of the hack, which will officially be titled: The Lost Realm! We also decided that we will work on a more smaller hack before doing more work with The Lost World which be titled: "A Link to the Past DX" as to reference Link's Awakening DX, being an updated version of the original LA.
To reduce confusion, here is the list of things that will remain:
- Story
- Most Overworld/Dungeon Tiles, others maybe changed
- Link's Sprite
- NPC's
What going to change:
- Dialogue and Text
- Overworld/Dungeon Design
- Title Screen
- Name/Inventory/HUD screens
What will be added:
- Item(s)
- ASM
- An Optional Dungeon
- Other things that I don't know ATM
We will not be abandoning TLW for ALTTPDX, I'm just gonna be doing more planning and writing down ideas whenever inspiration hits.
Also I want to try expanding on the Dungeons, making bigger/longer dungeons.
Hope to see this through...

Re: Help with my Hack?
Heya, Joey! Glad to see you're back into this as well as I am!
So I decided to take HM back out for a spin tonight and gain some lost knowledge and everything seemed to run okay. I have to say I really love your ideas and I would love to jump on the TLW bandwagon!
I'm not the expert for graphics..but as you know from my Super Metroid hacking skills, I was a great level designer!
If there is anything you can see me doing to help you out, like I could do the dungeons if you'd like, just let me know and I will surely jump without hesitation!
I remember how the big Super Metroid Fusion team didn't work out so well..but us three together again I'm sure something can be done. I know the reason for that not working was the lack of time and resources, however now I have infinite time on my hands. (Not literally, but..) Just send me a PM sometime.
I hope to hear from you soon, man.

I think that is was around 2011/2012-ish and it just stopped production because of the things White Yoshi said, but the only thing I have from that was the sig banner lol. But thats for a different topic...
I might get your help White Yoshi but so far we just started so It's gonna take some time before dungeons will be worked on. I will let you too when the time comes.

Seems legit. Just, like I said, drop me a PM when the time comes that you need me. I'll surely be there. Especially since it's something I enjoy doing that involves helping a friend out.

Re: Help with my Hack?
Okay, so I decided to try at dungeon editing since it's been awhile since I dabbled in that department.
So far it's been pretty smooth, but there is a problem I ran into.
There is a door I want locked with a small key but when I play the dungeon in-game it's opened like I had already opened it.
Here take a look:
HYRULE MAGIC:
IN-GAME:
So does anyone know what is the problem?

Re: Help with my Hack?
Try setting a locked door on the other side (the room above) and it should work. If its locked on one side and not on the otherside theyll appear as unlocked in game.
Founder- Since : 2012-06-19
Re: Help with my Hack?
I already tried that, it still unlocked. Might it be room headers?
Charmander106- Since : 2014-04-01
Re: Help with my Hack?
You must place a door type14 from both sides. In this room the type14 must be up, in the other down. Note: locked door can also be type 16, 17, 18 or 19. Don't know which types you have from the picture. And you must not use savestates, unless you are outside of this room. But to be sure load the game normally with the srm.
Puzzledude- Since : 2012-06-20
Re: Help with my Hack?
Door 038 is the door you need in the other room if I recall right. Cant remember which one works good for the bottom room tough but I know some locked doors dont work right. You just have to find the right one that goes with door 038.
Founder- Since : 2012-06-19
Re: Help with my Hack?
Yes, door 038 is a type14 locked door facing down (on room transit) and the 00E is a type14 locked door facing up (on room transit).
Puzzledude- Since : 2012-06-20
Re: Help with my Hack?
The doors are setup correctly, I made sure by checking in the game to see what it did. Still unlocked. This might be the games fault and not hyrule magic, I think.
