Super Metroid :: Comments
Re: Super Metroid
@JUD6MENT Yes, ProjectXVIII made this hack for that purpose. I first heard about it from RetroRGB and it got my interest as I enjoy the original Metroid as well. Since there was no MSU-1 hack at the time, I went ahead and made them compatible with each other and decided to combine them as a single patch.JUD6MENT wrote:So Retroid is a rom hack that recreates the original Metroid and we have a msu-1 patch for it? Is this right?
Is the zero mission from the gba ost? I was planning on doing full orchestra remixes of the classic music.
@JUD6MENT Yes, it is the GBA version. Also, an orchestrated PCM pack would be a nice addition. I cannot wait for your masterpiece to come into fruition.JUD6MENT wrote:Is the zero mission from the gba ost? I was planning on doing full orchestra remixes of the classic music.
New PCM pack added for Super Metroid: DJ@tomnium (link at top).
Update 2019.11.12
Re-uploaded PCM pack as the naming scheme was wrong (ie, renamed to Darkshock's naming scheme of smetroid_msu1 format).

PCM pack for Retroid, based on Milton Guasti's OST for a certain remake that caused quite a stir a few years back.

@Retroplay Are you referring to AM2R for this certain remake? I recognized the tunes as soon as I played some of them. At least now, I can put a name to the tunes. Nicely done, Retroplay. Thanks again for your contribution.Retroplay wrote:...based on Milton Guasti's OST for a certain remake that caused quite a stir a few years back.
I think i will have my Retroid full orchestra PCM done Friday or Saturday. I got all the music chosen for it, just need the extra time of the weekend to finish the project.
Indeed, AM2R.pepillopev wrote:

Killer OST, too bad more of the tracks doesn't fit well with Retroid/Super Metroid.
I found a bug in Retroid. This boss fight has 3 different songs play in the room and even has a silent moment and one of the 3 tracks not even be a PCM but the game's default music. Here is my save state.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1oH6ddruZxaTSSrIkeX-u2RpByOXqU233
I am playing on snes9x and not bsnes. I know Conn likes his save states be in bsnes so if this is a problem I can get a state before this room on my bsnes emulator.
One side note too, the jump animation for this rom hack is changed and when samus jump is in a spin it is crazy fast movement going left and right. This makes landing those single tile platforms very challenging, and there is a lot of them. Do we need to have the jump animation be like this? I am just curious of the choice behind this.

I never played even one megaman and the retroid is ported by pev. I'll leave it to him to check it, but am here if there are any problemsI am playing on snes9x and not bsnes. ProjectXVIII's Super Metroid hack did exhibit some weird behavior in the audio cues department (even before porting this code into DarkShock's patch). Does the behavior occur in the original non patched ROM? Unfortunately, there is not much I can do as there is no source source code from ProjectXVIII for this hack, for me, to work with.JUD6MENT wrote:I found a bug in Retroid. I took the hex edit route on this one in order to relocate ProjectXVIII's code to achieve full MSU-1 compatibility. I do know, if the original SNES music plays, most likely we need to find out what msu track should play using a hook for $2004. Darkshock's code SPC fallbacks if a MSU-1 PCM track is missing.
What emulator and its version are you using for this save state? I use bsnes-plus version 05 (Sep 8 2019). I cannot use this save state. I do not use Geiger or any form of Snes9x to debug.JUD6MENT wrote:Here is my save state.
To my understanding, this was ProjectXVIII's intention to mimic the original NES Metroid game mechanics. This would be something to bring up to the original developer of this patch. I have no source code to study and debug that part of the game. Remember, this is not my patch, I simply hex edited ProjectVIII and Darkshock's code to together so they would not interfere with each other.JUD6MENT wrote:One side note too, the jump animation for this rom hack is changed and when samus jump is in a spin it is crazy fast movement going left and right. Ok, i can get a bsnes save state of you are interested in taking a look. And i understand it is not your rom hack so it is alright about the jumping mechanic, its not game breaking.
Sure, send it my way and I will take a look at it. Let me know which version of bsnes-plus you are using so I can have it ready ahead of time to debug. Please take care to use bsnes-plus, not the regular standalone "non-debug" version for save states.JUD6MENT wrote:Ok, i can get a bsnes save state of you are interested in taking a look.
No worries, the way I wrote my last post seemed OK in my head. When I re-read my original post, it sounded harsh. Oh well, never meant any disrespect of any sort. I just wanted to let you know that there may be little I can do regarding this custom patch. Minor MSU-1 changes, I can definitely do. Bigger stuff like game mechanics and graphics, that is beyond me, for now.JUD6MENT wrote:And i understand it is not your rom hack so it is alright about the jumping mechanic, its not game breaking.
I have been busy last couple of days, but I got the save state now.

I found another bug. In this save state, the music changes for the next 3 rooms and then changes back to the right track. The track should not change at all to begin with. If you want to take a look here you go.

I understand if you can not do anything about these because you did not make the rom patch, but if you are interested in taking a look there is a link. So far both these bugs are not breaking the game if they are un-fixable.

Ok, so what I said earlier was a little wrong because I didn't realize I named one of my PCM Files wrong, but this room still has a problem with it. So what it is doing is uploading a track during the boss fight for about 4 seconds, then flips to a different track. Both tracks used in this room is the only place in the game that uses these two tracks, so if this is unfixable, I could make that first track be a type of 4 second intro and then the second track be the boss battle theme. Just a option if this is too hard to fix, I could figure something out that would work.
Also, I completed the game now and these are the only 2 bugs in uploading PCM that I found. I just need to do a little volume tuning to complete this PCM set
Im going to be finishing my Retroid Orchestra tonight. I have a suggestion, how would everyone feel if we gave Retroid its own page like some of the other rom hack msu-1 we have on this webpage? I can upload a YouTube preview if we do, though i won't be offended if we leave Retroid combined with this page.
What's the main difference between Quertymodo PCM Set and Relikk PCM Set of Blake Robinson Version?
I combined DarkShock's MSU1 and Trisma's hack to unlock Tourian doors for those interested.
A major design flaw by the big N if you ask me.

Bad timing from my side.
ShadowOne333's improved Super Metroid Redux hack also incorporates DarkShock's MSU1 hack along with a number of gameplay improvements.

Quertymodo You left a junk at the beginning of Track 30. Your previous PCM Set from RomHacking.net is better.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/euj8ewjv59d2022/SuperMetroidMSU1_Music.7z
Relikk Half of music at the end of Track 30 is missing.
I think both Blake Robinson Sets needs to lower down. It's too loud to play on TV.

With some luck edale has an easy script to re-normalize pcm sets, so hopefully he shares and it will work for any pcm set. It would be a nice thing if people can simply normalize it to their preferred sound level by simply executing a program:
