Chrono Trigger :: Comments
Retroplay wrote:That's not right, the rom should have an .sfc extension.Basically I renamed the patched Chrono Trigger+ rom as "chrono_msu.msu"
OK. Granted there is MSU support in the "Plus" patch, how should I do then to bind the pcm music tracks ? I don't really get how this should be done.
Folder structure is the same as any other MSU patched game.
If your rom is named "chrono_msu.sfc", it should be like this:
chrono_msu.sfc [patched rom]
chrono_msu.msu [empty file]
chrono_msu-1.pcm
chrono_msu-2.pcm
etc.
If your rom is named "chrono_msu.sfc", it should be like this:
chrono_msu.sfc [patched rom]
chrono_msu.msu [empty file]
chrono_msu-1.pcm
chrono_msu-2.pcm
etc.
I am going to be redoing the first page post, make it look more organized, clean up patch links, and actually add a working patch that is compatible with the FMV intro soon. Before I make changes, I am going to archive how it looks now just in case I make a mistake I can go back and fix it.

Description: DarkShock's original MSU-1 audio hack for Chrono Trigger. Mostly working with a few minor audio glitches here and there.
Author: Ramsis/smkdan
Features: Intro FMV only, no music replacement, no in-game FMV's
Download: https://github.com/Ramsis-SNES/ct-anime-intro
Description: smkdan's original FMV proof-of-concept hack for the MSU-1's predecessor, the 21FX. Updated by Ramsis for the final MSU-1 design.
Ok, we now have FMV intro video support as shown on the updated first post. I also cleaned up how it looks and replaced broken links. Hope you all enjoy.
Nice work from all contributors. I was wondering in JUD6MENT's FMV video, it doesn't have the beta in the intro. I redownloaded Quertymodo's patch and that one has the beta in the intro. Are you using the Quertymodo patch or a different one?

On the first post, download the one that has fmv intro. I am going to go double check i didn't make a mistake. You will have to re-patch a new rom

It is the right one. It should be named chrono_msu1 instead of ct_msu1 (I am going to fix that), but download this one, make a new patched rom using this one. Use the msu file in this one. Add the PCM-100 to your folder. Also, for the record, I just made a preview showcase, I didn't make the FMV video.

Hi, I'm the author of the Chrono Trigger Plus hack. This forum seems very active with talented individuals. I was wondering if I could enlist the help of one of them to finish adding the fully functional human Glenn transformation into the game?
It is 95% complete and works perfectly if I change 3 bytes in a hex editor. What I need is the option to change those bytes in game using an event. Simply having the thirty five bytes of main character data at 0x24F000 be read from the unused Ram addresses at 7E28A4 -7E28C7 (which are saved in sram) is all that is needed to have it working.
Unfortunately I simply don't know how.

Sounds like a deceptively large project if done in that manner.
While I am capable of ASM, I'm not exactly one of the most talented people here. My guess (without looking at the code) is that you'd have to update lots of little bits of code that all check the default location and update them to read from the ram addresses that you copy the data into.
If this data is accessed via pointer table or something instead of hard coded it could be easier than my first feeling..

I don't really know, it's just a little beyond me.
Hello everyone, I just wanted to drop off this link. https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4803/
*This link fixes a long forgotten but major game flaw. A missed colored pixel. Yes, you read that right. This after all these years is finally fixed. It's highly recommend to apply this patch asap! (*Sarcasm)
I hope everyone has a great day.

Hi All!
noob here, but the cthulthus patch doesn't seem to work for me. Patching the original CT ROM by putting it through the HiROM script works just fine (seems to). It creates a patched .sfc and a .msu file no problem. However, after putting the two files into a .pcm set folder (for example Judgement set) msu audio doesn't kick in.
The filenames (.msu and .sfc) come out identically, so it should activate msu mode right? Can somebody confirm that? That you deeply for your awesome work btw!
note: I have already patched some games sucessfully, so I think I roughly know how it works.

The .msu, the .sfc, and the pcm names all have to match. If the pcm names are different it wont work. Not sure if that is the issue or not, i just noticed you mentioned that only the .msu and .sfc are matching. Another thing rom check is rom headers, make sure those are removed.
I did get chuthulu patch to work and play so i can confirm that. Unless you have a specific reason you want chuthulu patch, i would suggest trying qwerty's.
Hope one of my suggestions helped. If you keep having trouble, i can look into chuthulu patch again and maybe see if there is something i can can help with.

The pcm DID indeed differ by one sign. patch and msu file ended by msu1, pcm by msu... Must have been too tired or something!
Thank you very much for the quick response and for the work you did to this! I'm honored!
I chose this patch because it is compatible with the german translation! Thanks again!
qwertymodo's patch is outdated and should only be used if you want FMVs.
One easy example of a bug that exists in qwertymodo's patch (but is fixed for mine) is when going to Spekkio to teach magic to 2 or more characters at the same time; a song should play each time a character learns magic, but instead, it will only play for the first character and then remain silent.
IIRC, his patch also doesn't behave correctly when pausing during battle; instead of pausing the song and then resuming from the paused offset, it just lowers the volume to 0, but continues playing the song internally.
My patch also runs faster at NMI, which is probably moot when emulating, but can help when running on the original hardware.
See: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=25303.msg417773#msg417773
I haven't worked on it for a year now and it could be considered final/finished.
Never really finished a playthrough with MSU-1 though, as I get bored really fast at about mid game.

So, Cthulhu, any intention to add the FMV intro to your version? I know it is mostly superfluous, but it is still mighty impressive to see such a thing running on the SNES.
They can answer this for themselves if anything has changed, but Cthulu has stated numerous times in this thread that they have no interest in adding FMV.
As mentioned in the post above, consider my hack finished.
I haven't played Chrono Trigger for a very long time and I believe I've all of the audio issues from the other hacks fixed by now.
My only suggestion for FMVs is the implementation of an emulator video playback interface in order to play decent/high quality videos (the majority of players play these games via emulators), but the idea was shot down because byuu refused to implement anything in MSU that wouldn't work on the real hardware (according to qwertymodo).
With that being said, it doesn't need to be named a "MSU extension" and can be named whatever, as in reality, it doesn't have any relationship with MSU; one could call it VPI (video playback interface) for example.
It should be trivial to fork Snes9x or bsnes, bake ffmpeg into them and reserve a SNES open bus address, if anyone ever wants to go through with this (savestate support mid video playback might be tricky, but should be doable). However, I don't like Chrono Trigger's FMVs and prefer the game without them, so the only thing that would come out of me is guidance on how to implement this.

Much thanks for your contribution, I shifted the link into first post. Unfortunately it's a bit of mess and you'll have to look for it to find it.
I hope one day we can clean the first post up a bit (e.g., shifting the plus patch stuff into merged section or so).

Whistles innocently.
So here's the Jazz album all looped and converted. All the tracks sound amazing, kudos to Square for making this album.
Some of the tracks... May sound very out of place in-game however... (eyes Lavos' Theme)... And 'To Far Away Times' was a 4:21 non-looping track in-game (the ending theme), but the Jazz arrangement was 6:13... So I sped it up, resulting in a much higher tempo piece (it's jazz... no one will notice... lol; it actually sounds quite good like this).
My audio source for these tracks was FLAC Hi-Res [96kHz/24bit], so everything's quite high fidelity.
Enjoy!
